PHASE 0
A working space in Shanghai
PHASE 0 is a studio, showroom and small shop by OUKKA, an independent design brand based in Shanghai. In Deqiu Art District, products, books and everyday conversations share the same room.
Opened on 22 September 2026, the space is part of our working life. Nick, founder of OUKKA and From Scratch Inc., works here and welcomes visitors; the wider team also works from our original Shanghai office. The brand and its products are developed together. PHASE 0 is the space. PHASE 04 is the bag collection.
Keeping what was already here.
We kept the existing walls and most of the finishes, changing only what needed attention. Secondhand furniture stayed in use. An old wooden door became the long table: new legs, the same paint, grain and marks. Small white labels tell the stories of these ordinary objects.
This is not a café, and we do not sell coffee. Sometimes a cup is part of a conversation. It is hospitality, rather than a menu.
Notes from everyday life
A book, for a while.
The shelves hold books we have collected through work and travel: design, brands, architecture, art and everyday life. When a visitor asked to buy one, we offered to lend it instead. Selected books can be borrowed by arrangement, with a WeChat contact exchanged. As of 13 October, the first two were still out in the world.
A place to wait out the rain.
One visitor came in with his dog when it started raining. They stayed for thirty or forty minutes. Nothing had been planned; the room was simply somewhere they could pause until the weather changed.
Two and a half hours.
Two people visiting for the first time stayed for two and a half hours. The conversation moved between brands, selling, business and life, without an agenda. Other visitors prefer to sit quietly near the door. Both feel at home here.
A paper bag comes back.
On 13 October, a returning visitor brought us a paper bag from another shop. We do not commission new branded shopping bags for the space. Clean, usable bags can have another turn; visitors who need one contribute RMB 1. The idea starts with an ordinary object already in someone’s hands, rather than another thing made for the occasion.

A Small Place to Start in China.
PHASE 0 is also exploring collaborations with independent international brands.
Small showcases, occasional pop-ups, exhibitions, or simply a conversation about what might be possible in Shanghai.
